In depth blog.

Media is told as a medium to transform information, but this sentence really cannot remind me how important media is. Through this assignment, I have resulted from several vital points that are affecting me a lot.
First of all, media is a bridge between an individual and another,  a group and another, a culture and another and of course, a country and another. The most obvious importance of that is called globalisation, which is the prior prerequisite for most social media platforms (cultural) and collaboration (commercial). Additionally, as it is a generation of information explosion, different media can transmit totally different even opposite information and attitudes through different frames of same materials. Plus, it is not anymore the time when a little number of professional producers creating most of the media contents, although the professional contents still take up much space of all, increasing number of non-professional producers keep adding various attitudes and angles. This new type of “pro-ams” media is unlimited. For an example, a video on YouTube is an original piece of information, and then a number of audiences comment on and reply to other comments, and sometimes even create another video replying to the origin. The comments below the origin are actually a part of the video, for audiences like me, however, if I sometimes comment or reply to the comments, the contents I post also become a part of the information to other audiences. This is a magic circulation created by Web 2.0.
Secondly, some personal results were examined after the media usage tracking practice. Most noticeably, cellphone dependence is extremely serious on me, and that is considered reasoning after all. The personal computer seems much more powerful and has much more functions, but it only ranks second, much less important than the cell phone. Apparently, cell phones have much less volume, almost one-eighth of a computer. Therefore, sometimes there are no “strong” media, but only “right” media fulfilling consumers’ needs. In addition, cellphone are better at alarms, reminders and notifications since the applications can always make the notifications more noticeable than ever. Besides, there again, a computer is unquestionably necessary for its multitasking power. To be specific, personally, multitasking is especially important to me since I barely use one single medium at a time, both on devices and platforms. Computers seem more stable and powerful when multitasking.
Some extra points were noticed as well. As mentioned above, the number of non-professional producers implies an unstoppable growth, becoming one of them is never easier. That is one of the reasons that media tactics and strategies seem like exchanged. Although one cannot say that they have exchanged completely, it is true that the deciding line is becoming ambiguous. Therefore, media tactics and strategies are affected by each other more than ever, and so the power in media chain is more powerful than ever, too. In this situation, censorship towards such power becomes sensitive and serious. Plus, the creation and massive effect of propaganda become easy and enormous.
Last, a slice of results is brought after the digital media fast. The most straightforward reply is, no, I can not survive a day without digital media. All my needs for school, entertainment, athletics, and for sure, boredom, are typically tightly tied to the digital devices and platforms. This result is personal since it was my own choice and preference to depend almost everything on the cell phone. Actually, the functions can be easily replaced by different devices and tools, but the key point is that cell phone combines them all together and often make connections between them. There is also a negative result after the fast, which is I wasted a lot of time on checking time. Specifically, once I want to check the time, I have to light up the screen and quite a few notifications are likely there, so then I have to unlock it to check some or all the notifications. The whole movement takes tens of times compared to just checking time for less than 1 second, although it seems a reasonable example of multimedia on digital devices and internet connections.

Digital-free day.

I have just done my fast tracking this very moment and I missed my computer eagerly bad. Although I broke the fast quite a lot, still I felt really harsh. At the beginning of the fast, I turned all the notifications off on my cell phone, including every social site and even Messages. After all, there are several main needs which cannot be replaced for me: time, multitasking notebook, music, and digital personal trainer. I have experienced a perfect example of a combination and importance of digital multi-media today. I went to the gym and a time alarm was needed before, and I need music on my way and during the workout. The digital training application was certainly needed and irreplaceable as well. Going to the supermarket after working out was a part of daily routine, too, the shopping lists and reminders on the digital notebook were definitely important since I’m quite oblivious, so I take notes of everything. Each function I mentioned seems replaceable with different dev...

Third day.

I found an interesting series of videos on YouTube, and the long-tail phenomenon of them is quite interesting as well. The series is called Cupid On Street, the host finds single boys and girls on street in Taiwan and pairs them depending on few simple descriptions. Each video is actually short that none is longer than 10 minutes, but each video can cause 20 thousand comments on growing, which can last more than 6 months. I also found that the background of heroes and heroines are more attractive to audiences (their appearances, jobs, hobbies, and sometimes even criminal record). These contents are growing out from the original medium, Youtube, to Facebook, Instagram, and even some news sites. After spending less than 10 minutes on the video itself, almost half an hour would be spent on browsing their social sites and reading stories about them. This type of creation is a good representation of Web 2.0, I think.

Second day.

Today, one of my friends drove me to the supermarket and another friend of mine picked me up and took me home. Both of them played music on cars but I found differences on media. Former friend paired his cell phone with Aux media on the car through Bluetooth and played songs on his phone, while the other friend just simply turned on the radio on her car. The first friend is at the same age with me, and the second one is around 30 years old. I found the difference and in retrospect, it seems teenagers and young peers (including myself) always play only music on their own phones while the other don’t want to bother pairing devices to their cars. This reminds me of age-generated media. Further thinking, a number of young people is strongly persistent on expressing their tastes and preferences through the media they use. Media is extra important for these people as it is not only a vital part of daily life, it gradually becomes an indivisible whole with personalities.
